Die Grille trällerte und sang | The cricket had sung her song | Sonis dum somer' kantad' | Grillchen, das den Sommer lang
den ganzen lieben Sommer lang | all summer long | De cikad'. | Zirpt' und sang,
und fand sich plötzlich sehr beklommen, | but found her victuals too few | Kiam venis la jarfin' | Litt nun, da der Winter droht',
als der Nordwind war gekommen: | when the north wind blew. | Sen proviz' ĝi trovis sin; | Harte Zeit und bittre Not:
im Haus war nicht ein Bröselein, | Nowhere could she espy | Ĉar ne estis ie de | Nicht das kleinste Würmchen nur
Regenwurm und Fliegenbein. | a single morsel of worm or fly. | Muŝ' aŭ verm' pecet', pro ve' | Und von Fliegen keine Spur!
Hunger schreiend lief sie hin | Her neighbor, the ant, might, | Kaj malsat' ĝi turnis sin | Und vor Hunger weinend leise,
zur Ameis', ihrer Nachbarin, | she thought, help her in her plight, | Al Formik', la najbarin', | Schlich's zur Nachbarin Ameise,
mit der Bitte, ihr zu geben | and she begged her for a little grain | Ŝin petante pri paner'; | Fleht' sie an in ihrer Not,
etwas Korn zum Weiterleben | till summer would come back again. | Ĉar grandegis la mizer'. | Ihr zu leihn ein Körnlein Brot,
nur bis nächstes Jahr: | “By next August I’ll repay both | "Ĝis la nova kant-sezon' | Bis der Sommer wiederkehre.
"Ich werd' Euch zahlen", sprach sie gar, | Interest and principal; animal’s oath.” | Iĝos ja de mi redon'," | "Glaub' mir," sprach's, "auf Grillenehre,
"noch vor Verfall, mein Grillenwort, | Now, the ant may have a fault or two | Ĵuris ĝi, "kaj pagos mi | Vor dem Erntemond noch zahl'
Hauptstock, Zinsen und so fort." | But lending is not something she will do. | Interezon ĝis Juni'!" | Zins ich dir und Kapital."
Die Ameis' aber leiht nicht gern: | She asked what the cricket did in summer. | La formiko, kiu vere | Emschen, das, wie manche lieben
sie krankt ein wenig an Knausrigkeit: | “By night and day, to any comer | Ne pruntdonon ŝatis tre, | Leute das Verleihen hasst,
"Was triebt ihr denn zur Sommerzeit?" | I sang whenever I had the chance.” | Diris: "Mi ĝin donos ne! | Fragt die Borgerin: "Was hast
fragt sie die Borgerin von fern. | “You sang, did you? That’s nice. Now dance.” | Kion faris vi somere?" - | Du im Sommer denn getrieben?" -
"Da war ich Tag und Nacht besetzt, | "La pasantojn per muzik' | "Tag und Nacht hab' ich ergötzt
ich sang und hatte viel Applaus." | Mi ĝojigis ĝis aŭtun'." | Durch mein Singen alle Leut'."
"Gesungen habt Ihr? Ei der Daus, | "Mi tre ĝojas, dancu nun!" | "Durch dein Singen? Sehr erfreut!
wohlan, so tanzet jetzt!" | Diris tiam la formik'. | Weißt du was? Dann tanze jetzt!"
