	An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ne scias mi, kial subita	I cannot divine what it meaneth,	Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,
malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	This haunting nameless pain:	pro kio tia trist'?
el tempo jam enterigita	A tale of the bygone ages	Fabel' el antikva foro
legendo al mi reviviĝis.	Keeps brooding through my brain:	ne lasas de mi kun persist'.

Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,	Aere fridetas, trankvilas,
la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,	And peaceful flows the Rhine,	malhelas jam la Rejn'.
per oro de l'sun' en vespero	The thirsty summits are drinking	La monto surpinte brilas
la supro de l' monto rebrilas.	The sunset's flooding wine;	vespere en rava scen'.

Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:	The loveliest maiden is sitting	Tre ĉarma feino sidas,
en ora ornamo brilante,	High-throned in yon blue air,	jen supre por ador';
sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	Her golden jewels are shining,	la ora ornamo ridas;
la harojn mistere kombante.	She combs her golden hair;	ŝi kombas harojn el or'.

La oran kombilon ŝi movas	She combs with comb that is golden,	Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo
kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,	And sings a weird refrain	kaj kantas kun pasi';
kaj forto mirinda sin trovas	That steeps in a deadly enchantment	mirigas min la elbrilo
en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.	The listener's ravished brain:	kaj forto de l' melodi'.

Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,	The doomed in his drifting shallop,	Ŝipisto ŝipeton gvidas,
ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.
kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	He sees not the yawing breakers,	Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',
rigardas li al la kantanto.	He sees but the maid alone:	li vidas nur supren sen halt'.

Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras
perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;	So perish sailor and bark;	la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';
ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,	And this, with her baleful singing,	kaj tio de l' kant' eliras
