		An ancient legend of the Rhine

Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,	Ne scias mi, kial subita	I cannot divine what it meaneth,
pro kio tia trist'?	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	This haunting nameless pain:
Fabel' el antikva foro	el tempo jam enterigita	A tale of the bygone ages
ne lasas de mi kun persist'.	legendo al mi reviviĝis.	Keeps brooding through my brain:

Aere fridetas, trankvilas,	Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,
malhelas jam la Rejn'.	la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,	And peaceful flows the Rhine,
La monto surpinte brilas	per oro de l'sun' en vespero	The thirsty summits are drinking
vespere en rava scen'.	la supro de l' monto rebrilas.	The sunset's flooding wine;

Tre ĉarma feino sidas,	Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:	The loveliest maiden is sitting
jen supre por ador';	en ora ornamo brilante,	High-throned in yon blue air,
la ora ornamo ridas;	sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	Her golden jewels are shining,
ŝi kombas harojn el or'.	la harojn mistere kombante.	She combs her golden hair;

Ŝi kombas per ora kombilo	La oran kombilon ŝi movas	She combs with comb that is golden,
kaj kantas kun pasi';	kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,	And sings a weird refrain
mirigas min la elbrilo	kaj forto mirinda sin trovas	That steeps in a deadly enchantment
kaj forto de l' melodi'.	en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.	The listener's ravished brain:

Ŝipisto ŝipeton gvidas,	Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,	The doomed in his drifting shallop,
lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.	ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	He sees not the yawing breakers,
li vidas nur supren sen halt'.	rigardas li al la kantanto.	He sees but the maid alone:

Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';	perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;	So perish sailor and bark;
kaj tio de l' kant' eliras	ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,	And this, with her baleful singing,
de Lorelaj-siren'.	per sia mirinda kantado.	Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
