	An ancient legend of the Rhine

Min kaptas malgaj' en la koro,	I cannot divine what it meaneth,	Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,	Ne scias mi, kial subita
pro kio tia trist'?	This haunting nameless pain:	Tristissimus cur sim,	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;
Fabel' el antikva foro	A tale of the bygone ages	Antiqui aevi fabellam	el tempo jam enterigita
ne lasas de mi kun persist'.	Keeps brooding through my brain:	Cur saepe volverim.	legendo al mi reviviĝis.

Aere fridetas, trankvilas,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,	Vesperascit et frigescit,	Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,
malhelas jam la Rejn'.	And peaceful flows the Rhine,	Et Rhenus leniter it,	la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,
La monto surpinte brilas	The thirsty summits are drinking	Cacumen montis lucescit,	per oro de l'sun' en vespero
vespere en rava scen'.	The sunset's flooding wine;	Dum Phoebus occidit.	la supro de l' monto rebrilas.

Tre ĉarma feino sidas,	The loveliest maiden is sitting	Sedet in summo montis	Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:

Ŝipisto ŝipeton gvidas,	The doomed in his drifting shallop,	In cymba navitam mille	Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,
lin kaptas ve' de ekzalt'.	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	Angores feri tenent,	ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,
Li ja la rifojn ne vidas',	He sees not the yawing breakers,	Non videt scopulos ille,	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero
li vidas nur supren sen halt'.	He sees but the maid alone:	Ocli non si sursum vident.	rigardas li al la kantanto.

Mi kredas, ke ondoj tiras	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Opinor undas devorare	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela
la ŝipon funden de l' Rejn';	So perish sailor and bark;	Nautam cum navicula,	perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;
kaj tio de l' kant' eliras	And this, with her baleful singing,	Effecit solo canendo	ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,
de Lorelaj-siren'.	Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.	Lurleia id dea.	per sia mirinda kantado.
