		An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,	Ne scias mi, kial subita	I cannot divine what it meaneth,	Malgajon mi sentas en koro,
daß ich so traurig bin;	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	This haunting nameless pain:	sed kial tia tim'?
ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,	el tempo jam enterigita	A tale of the bygone ages	Legendo el pratempa foro
das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.	legendo al mi reviviĝis.	Keeps brooding through my brain:	Vagadas tra mia anim'.

Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,	Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,	Jam fluas la Rejn' en malhelo,
und ruhig fließt der Rhein;	la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,	And peaceful flows the Rhine,	kaj malvarmetas l' aer'.
der Gipfel des Berges funkelt	per oro de l'sun' en vespero	The thirsty summits are drinking	Sed brilas la mont' en orbelo
im Abendsonnenschein.	la supro de l' monto rebrilas.	The sunset's flooding wine;	pro suna lum' de l' vesper'.

Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet	Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:	The loveliest maiden is sitting	Jen supre kabino provokas
dort oben wunderbar,	en ora ornamo brilante,	High-throned in yon blue air,	per ora juvelar',
ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,	sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	Her golden jewels are shining,	kaj ŝia beleco allogas
sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.	la harojn mistere kombante.	She combs her golden hair;	kaj ŝia ora harar'.

Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,	La oran kombilon ŝi movas	She combs with comb that is golden,	Ŝi kombas ĝin, kantas sorĉige,
und singt ein Lied dabei;	kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,	And sings a weird refrain	sirene kantas ŝi
das hat eine wundersame,	kaj forto mirinda sin trovas	That steeps in a deadly enchantment	per neimagebla, mirige
gewaltige Melodei.	en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.	The listener's ravished brain:	potenca melodi'.

Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe	Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,	The doomed in his drifting shallop,	Ŝipiston en eta boato
ergreift es mit wildem Weh;	ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	Turmentas koremoci'.
er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	He sees not the yawing breakers,	Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,
er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.	rigardas li al la kantanto.	He sees but the maid alone:	rigardas nur supren al ŝi!

Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo
am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;	perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;	So perish sailor and bark;	la ondoj lin kun boat'.
