That I am so sorrowful?	Tristissimus cur sim,	This haunting nameless pain:	al mia tristema kor':
A fable of old Times so terrifies,	Antiqui aevi fabellam	A tale of the bygone ages	Antikva legendo min kaptis,
Leaves my heart so thoughtful.	Cur saepe volverim.	Keeps brooding through my brain:	ne cedas el mia memor'.

The air is cool and it darkens,	Vesperascit et frigescit,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,	La Rejno fluadas trankvile
And calmly flows the Rhine;	Et Rhenus leniter it,	And peaceful flows the Rhine,	murmuras kiel mister',

With golden comb so lustrous,	Aureolo pectine pectit,	She combs with comb that is golden,	Ŝi kombas la oran hararon
And thereby a song sings,	Carmen canens procul,	And sings a weird refrain	abundan per ora kombil',
It has a tone so wondrous,	Mirandum id habet modum	That steeps in a deadly enchantment	kantante misteran lidon, ²⁾
That powerful melody rings.	Nec non virilem simul.	The listener's ravished brain:	ravantan kiel sunbril'.

The shipper in the little ship	In cymba navitam mille	The doomed in his drifting shallop,	Ŝipisto en sia ŝipeto
It effects with woe sad might;	Angores feri tenent,	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	kaptiĝas per stranga dolor',
He does not see the rocky slip,	Non videt scopulos ille,	He sees not the yawing breakers,	la rifon li tute ignoras.
He only regards dreaded height.	Ocli non si sursum vident.	He sees but the maid alone:	atentas nur ŝin kun fervor'.

			1) En la sube menciita kajero, el kiu mi, Manfred Retzlaff, kopiis tiun ĉi esperantigon, la linio tekstas: "kaj sia oraĵo radias", kun "sia" anstataŭ "ŝia"'. Tio ŝajne estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ gramatika eraro de la tradukinto.
			2) En la origina versio troviĝas tie ĉi la vorto "liedon", kio estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ neologismo inventita de la tradukinto Paul Christaller.
			3) Mi, Manfred Retzlaff, enmetis la duoblan punkton post la vorto "kredas". Ĝi mankas en la origina traduko de Paul Christaller.
