I cannot divine what it meaneth,	Ne scias mi, kio okazis	I do not know what it signifies.
This haunting nameless pain:	al mia tristema kor':	That I am so sorrowful?
A tale of the bygone ages	Antikva legendo min kaptis,	A fable of old Times so terrifies,
Keeps brooding through my brain:	ne cedas el mia memor'.	Leaves my heart so thoughtful.

The faint air cools in the gloaming,	La Rejno fluadas trankvile	The air is cool and it darkens,
And peaceful flows the Rhine,	murmuras kiel mister',	And calmly flows the Rhine;
The thirsty summits are drinking	la supron ŝtonegan orumas	The summit of the mountain hearkens
The sunset's flooding wine;	sunbriloj de la vesper'.	In evening sunshine line.

The loveliest maiden is sitting	Plej bela virgino jen sidas	The most beautiful Maiden entrances
High-throned in yon blue air,	mirinda sur la montet'	Above wonderfully there,
Her golden jewels are shining,	kaj ŝia oraĵo radias, ¹⁾	Her beautiful golden attire glances,
She combs her golden hair;	ŝi logas kiel magnet'.	She combs her golden hair.

She combs with comb that is golden,	Ŝi kombas la oran hararon	With golden comb so lustrous,
And sings a weird refrain	abundan per ora kombil',	And thereby a song sings,
That steeps in a deadly enchantment	kantante misteran lidon, ²⁾	It has a tone so wondrous,
The listener's ravished brain:	ravantan kiel sunbril'.	That powerful melody rings.

The doomed in his drifting shallop,	Ŝipisto en sia ŝipeto	The shipper in the little ship
Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	kaptiĝas per stranga dolor',	It effects with woe sad might;
He sees not the yawing breakers,	la rifon li tute ignoras.	He does not see the rocky slip,
He sees but the maid alone:	atentas nur ŝin kun fervor'.	He only regards dreaded height.

The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Mi kredas: la ondoj englutas ³⁾	I believe the turbulent waves
So perish sailor and bark;	ŝipiston, ŝipeton je l' fin',	Swallow the last shipper and boat;
And this, with her baleful singing,	kaj kulpa pri tio nur estas	She with her singing craves
Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.	kantado de la virin'.	All to visit her magic moat.

	1) En la sube menciita kajero, el kiu mi, Manfred Retzlaff, kopiis tiun ĉi esperantigon, la linio tekstas: "kaj sia oraĵo radias", kun "sia" anstataŭ "ŝia"'. Tio ŝajne estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ gramatika eraro de la tradukinto.
	2) En la origina versio troviĝas tie ĉi la vorto "liedon", kio estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ neologismo inventita de la tradukinto Paul Christaller.
	3) Mi, Manfred Retzlaff, enmetis la duoblan punkton post la vorto "kredas". Ĝi mankas en la origina traduko de Paul Christaller.
