Heinrich Heine,
The Lorelei

Heinrich Heine,
Lorelej

Heinrich Heine,
The Lorelei

translated by Mark Twain   translated by Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof   translated by L. W. Garnham

An ancient legend of the Rhine

I cannot divine what it meaneth,   Ne scias mi, kial subita   I do not know what it signifies.
This haunting nameless pain:   malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;   That I am so sorrowful?
A tale of the bygone ages   el tempo jam enterigita   A fable of old Times so terrifies,
Keeps brooding through my brain:   legendo al mi reviviĝis.   Leaves my heart so thoughtful.

The faint air cools in the gloaming,   Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,   The air is cool and it darkens,
And peaceful flows the Rhine,   la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,   And calmly flows the Rhine;
The thirsty summits are drinking   per oro de l'sun' en vespero   The summit of the mountain hearkens
The sunset's flooding wine;   la supro de l' monto rebrilas.   In evening sunshine line.

The loveliest maiden is sitting   Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:   The most beautiful Maiden entrances
High-throned in yon blue air,   en ora ornamo brilante,   Above wonderfully there,
Her golden jewels are shining,   sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,   Her beautiful golden attire glances,
She combs her golden hair;   la harojn mistere kombante.   She combs her golden hair.

She combs with comb that is golden,   La oran kombilon ŝi movas   With golden comb so lustrous,
And sings a weird refrain   kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,   And thereby a song sings,
That steeps in a deadly enchantment   kaj forto mirinda sin trovas   It has a tone so wondrous,
The listener's ravished brain:   en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.   That powerful melody rings.

The doomed in his drifting shallop,   Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,   The shipper in the little ship
Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,   It effects with woe sad might;
He sees not the yawing breakers,   kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero   He does not see the rocky slip,
He sees but the maid alone:   rigardas li al la kantanto.   He only regards dreaded height.

The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela   I believe the turbulent waves
So perish sailor and bark;   perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;   Swallow the last shipper and boat;
And this, with her baleful singing,   ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,   She with her singing craves
Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.   per sia mirinda kantado.   All to visit her magic moat.
