That I am so sorrowful?	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;	Malgaja en la kor’.	daß ich so traurig bin;	This haunting nameless pain:
A fable of old Times so terrifies,	el tempo jam enterigita	Antikva fabelo restas	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,	A tale of the bygone ages
Leaves my heart so thoughtful.	legendo al mi reviviĝis.	Por ĉiam en mia memor’.	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.	Keeps brooding through my brain:

The air is cool and it darkens,	Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,	Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,

Above wonderfully there,	en ora ornamo brilante,	Kun ora juvelar’,	dort oben wunderbar,	High-throned in yon blue air,
Her beautiful golden attire glances,	sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,	La belan vizaĝon kronas	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,	Her golden jewels are shining,
She combs her golden hair.	la harojn mistere kombante.	Mirinde la ora harar’.	sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.	She combs her golden hair;

With golden comb so lustrous,	La oran kombilon ŝi movas	Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,	She combs with comb that is golden,
And thereby a song sings,	kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,	Kaj dume kantas ŝi.	und singt ein Lied dabei;	And sings a weird refrain
It has a tone so wondrous,	kaj forto mirinda sin trovas	Mirige tuŝas al koro	das hat eine wundersame,	That steeps in a deadly enchantment

The shipper in the little ship	Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,	Kaj sopiregon eksentas	Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe	The doomed in his drifting shallop,
It effects with woe sad might;	ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,	Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;	ergreift es mit wildem Weh;	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
He does not see the rocky slip,	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero	Rifaron li ne priatentas,	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,	He sees not the yawing breakers,
He only regards dreaded height.	rigardas li al la kantanto.	Al monto rigardas li nur.	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.	He sees but the maid alone:

I believe the turbulent waves	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela	Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
Swallow the last shipper and boat;	perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;	Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;	So perish sailor and bark;
She with her singing craves	ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,	Kaj tion kaŭzis feine	und das hat mit ihrem Singen	And this, with her baleful singing,
