Ne scias mi, kio okazis	Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,	I cannot divine what it meaneth,
al mia tristema kor':	daß ich so traurig bin;	This haunting nameless pain:
Antikva legendo min kaptis,	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,	A tale of the bygone ages
ne cedas el mia memor'.	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.	Keeps brooding through my brain:

La Rejno fluadas trankvile	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,
murmuras kiel mister',	und ruhig fließt der Rhein;	And peaceful flows the Rhine,
la supron ŝtonegan orumas	der Gipfel des Berges funkelt	The thirsty summits are drinking
sunbriloj de la vesper'.	im Abendsonnenschein.	The sunset's flooding wine;

Plej bela virgino jen sidas	Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet	The loveliest maiden is sitting
mirinda sur la montet'	dort oben wunderbar,	High-throned in yon blue air,
kaj ŝia oraĵo radias, ¹⁾	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,	Her golden jewels are shining,

Ŝi kombas la oran hararon	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,	She combs with comb that is golden,

la rifon li tute ignoras.	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,	He sees not the yawing breakers,
atentas nur ŝin kun fervor'.	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.	He sees but the maid alone:

Mi kredas: la ondoj englutas ³⁾	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
ŝipiston, ŝipeton je l' fin',	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;	So perish sailor and bark;
kaj kulpa pri tio nur estas	und das hat mit ihrem Singen	And this, with her baleful singing,

1) En la sube menciita kajero, el kiu mi, Manfred Retzlaff, kopiis tiun ĉi esperantigon, la linio tekstas: "kaj sia oraĵo radias", kun "sia" anstataŭ "ŝia"'. Tio ŝajne estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ gramatika eraro de la tradukinto.
2) En la origina versio troviĝas tie ĉi la vorto "liedon", kio estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ neologismo inventita de la tradukinto Paul Christaller.
3) Mi, Manfred Retzlaff, enmetis la duoblan punkton post la vorto "kredas". Ĝi mankas en la origina traduko de Paul Christaller.
