                    An ancient legend of the Rhine
 
I do not know what it signifies.   Ne scias mi, kial subita   Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,   Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,   Malgajon mi sentas en koro,   I cannot divine what it meaneth,
That I am so sorrowful?   malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;   Tristissimus cur sim,   daß ich so traurig bin;   sed kial tia tim'?   This haunting nameless pain:
A fable of old Times so terrifies,   el tempo jam enterigita   Antiqui aevi fabellam   ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,   Legendo el pratempa foro   A tale of the bygone ages
Leaves my heart so thoughtful.   legendo al mi reviviĝis.   Cur saepe volverim.   das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.   Vagadas tra mia anim'.   Keeps brooding through my brain:
 
The air is cool and it darkens,   Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,   Vesperascit et frigescit,   Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,   Jam fluas la Rejn' en malhelo,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,
And calmly flows the Rhine;   la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,   Et Rhenus leniter it,   und ruhig fließt der Rhein;   kaj malvarmetas l' aer'.   And peaceful flows the Rhine,
The summit of the mountain hearkens   per oro de l'sun' en vespero   Cacumen montis lucescit,   der Gipfel des Berges funkelt   Sed brilas la mont' en orbelo   The thirsty summits are drinking
In evening sunshine line.   la supro de l' monto rebrilas.   Dum Phoebus occidit.   im Abendsonnenschein.   pro suna lum' de l' vesper'.   The sunset's flooding wine;
 
The most beautiful Maiden entrances   Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:   Sedet in summo montis   Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet   Jen supre kabino provokas   The loveliest maiden is sitting
Above wonderfully there,   en ora ornamo brilante,   Virgo pulcherrima,   dort oben wunderbar,   per ora juvelar',   High-throned in yon blue air,
Her beautiful golden attire glances,   sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,   Auro nitet gemma frontis,   ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,   kaj ŝia beleco allogas   Her golden jewels are shining,
She combs her golden hair.   la harojn mistere kombante.   Se pectit auricoma.   sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.   kaj ŝia ora harar'.   She combs her golden hair;
 
With golden comb so lustrous,   La oran kombilon ŝi movas   Aureolo pectine pectit,   Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,   Ŝi kombas ĝin, kantas sorĉige,   She combs with comb that is golden,
And thereby a song sings,   kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,   Carmen canens procul,   und singt ein Lied dabei;   sirene kantas ŝi   And sings a weird refrain
It has a tone so wondrous,   kaj forto mirinda sin trovas   Mirandum id habet modum   das hat eine wundersame,   per neimagebla, mirige   That steeps in a deadly enchantment
That powerful melody rings.   en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.   Nec non virilem simul.   gewaltige Melodei.   potenca melodi'.   The listener's ravished brain:
 
The shipper in the little ship   Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,   In cymba navitam mille   Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe   Ŝipiston en eta boato   The doomed in his drifting shallop,
It effects with woe sad might;   ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,   Angores feri tenent,   ergreift es mit wildem Weh;   Turmentas koremoci'.   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
He does not see the rocky slip,   kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero   Non videt scopulos ille,   er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,   Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,   He sees not the yawing breakers,
He only regards dreaded height.   rigardas li al la kantanto.   Ocli non si sursum vident.   er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.   rigardas nur supren al ŝi!   He sees but the maid alone:
 
I believe the turbulent waves   Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela   Opinor undas devorare   Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen   Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
Swallow the last shipper and boat;   perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;   Nautam cum navicula,   am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;   la ondoj lin kun boat'.   So perish sailor and bark;
She with her singing craves   ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,   Effecit solo canendo   und das hat mit ihrem Singen   Nun kuŝas li en la profundo   And this, with her baleful singing,
All to visit her magic moat.   per sia mirinda kantado.   Lurleia id dea.   die Lorelei getan.   pro Loreleja kantad'.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
