I do not know what it signifies.	Ne scias mi, kio okazis	Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,	I cannot divine what it meaneth,
That I am so sorrowful?	al mia tristema kor':	daß ich so traurig bin;	This haunting nameless pain:
A fable of old Times so terrifies,	Antikva legendo min kaptis,	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,	A tale of the bygone ages
Leaves my heart so thoughtful.	ne cedas el mia memor'.	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.	Keeps brooding through my brain:

The air is cool and it darkens,	La Rejno fluadas trankvile	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,
And calmly flows the Rhine;	murmuras kiel mister',	und ruhig fließt der Rhein;	And peaceful flows the Rhine,
The summit of the mountain hearkens	la supron ŝtonegan orumas	der Gipfel des Berges funkelt	The thirsty summits are drinking

Above wonderfully there,	mirinda sur la montet'	dort oben wunderbar,	High-throned in yon blue air,
Her beautiful golden attire glances,	kaj ŝia oraĵo radias, ¹⁾	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,	Her golden jewels are shining,
She combs her golden hair.	ŝi logas kiel magnet'.	sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.	She combs her golden hair;

With golden comb so lustrous,	Ŝi kombas la oran hararon	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,	She combs with comb that is golden,
And thereby a song sings,	abundan per ora kombil',	und singt ein Lied dabei;	And sings a weird refrain
It has a tone so wondrous,	kantante misteran lidon, ²⁾	das hat eine wundersame,	That steeps in a deadly enchantment

The shipper in the little ship	Ŝipisto en sia ŝipeto	Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe	The doomed in his drifting shallop,
It effects with woe sad might;	kaptiĝas per stranga dolor',	ergreift es mit wildem Weh;	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
He does not see the rocky slip,	la rifon li tute ignoras.	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,	He sees not the yawing breakers,
He only regards dreaded height.	atentas nur ŝin kun fervor'.	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.	He sees but the maid alone:

I believe the turbulent waves	Mi kredas: la ondoj englutas ³⁾	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
Swallow the last shipper and boat;	ŝipiston, ŝipeton je l' fin',	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;	So perish sailor and bark;
She with her singing craves	kaj kulpa pri tio nur estas	und das hat mit ihrem Singen	And this, with her baleful singing,

	1) En la sube menciita kajero, el kiu mi, Manfred Retzlaff, kopiis tiun ĉi esperantigon, la linio tekstas: "kaj sia oraĵo radias", kun "sia" anstataŭ "ŝia"'. Tio ŝajne estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ gramatika eraro de la tradukinto.
	2) En la origina versio troviĝas tie ĉi la vorto "liedon", kio estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ neologismo inventita de la tradukinto Paul Christaller.
	3) Mi, Manfred Retzlaff, enmetis la duoblan punkton post la vorto "kredas". Ĝi mankas en la origina traduko de Paul Christaller.
