Heinrich Heine,
Lorelejo

Heinrich Heine,
The Lorelei

translated by Joachim Gießner   translated by L. W. Garnham

Malgajon mi sentas en koro,   I do not know what it signifies.
sed kial tia tim'?   That I am so sorrowful?
Legendo el pratempa foro   A fable of old Times so terrifies,
Vagadas tra mia anim'.   Leaves my heart so thoughtful.

Jam fluas la Rejn' en malhelo,   The air is cool and it darkens,
kaj malvarmetas l' aer'.   And calmly flows the Rhine;
Sed brilas la mont' en orbelo   The summit of the mountain hearkens
pro suna lum' de l' vesper'.   In evening sunshine line.

Jen supre kabino provokas   The most beautiful Maiden entrances
per ora juvelar',   Above wonderfully there,
kaj ŝia beleco allogas   Her beautiful golden attire glances,
kaj ŝia ora harar'.   She combs her golden hair.

Ŝi kombas ĝin, kantas sorĉige,   With golden comb so lustrous,
sirene kantas ŝi   And thereby a song sings,
per neimagebla, mirige   It has a tone so wondrous,
potenca melodi'.   That powerful melody rings.

Ŝipiston en eta boato   The shipper in the little ship
Turmentas koremoci'.   It effects with woe sad might;
Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,   He does not see the rocky slip,
rigardas nur supren al ŝi!   He only regards dreaded height.

Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo   I believe the turbulent waves
la ondoj lin kun boat'.   Swallow the last shipper and boat;
Nun kuŝas li en la profundo   She with her singing craves
pro Loreleja kantad'.   All to visit her magic moat.
