Malgajon mi sentas en koro,   I do not know what it signifies.   Ne scias mi, kio okazis   I cannot divine what it meaneth,
sed kial tia tim'?   That I am so sorrowful?   al mia tristema kor':   This haunting nameless pain:
Legendo el pratempa foro   A fable of old Times so terrifies,   Antikva legendo min kaptis,   A tale of the bygone ages
Vagadas tra mia anim'.   Leaves my heart so thoughtful.   ne cedas el mia memor'.   Keeps brooding through my brain:
 
Jam fluas la Rejn' en malhelo,   The air is cool and it darkens,   La Rejno fluadas trankvile   The faint air cools in the gloaming,
kaj malvarmetas l' aer'.   And calmly flows the Rhine;   murmuras kiel mister',   And peaceful flows the Rhine,
Sed brilas la mont' en orbelo   The summit of the mountain hearkens   la supron ŝtonegan orumas   The thirsty summits are drinking
pro suna lum' de l' vesper'.   In evening sunshine line.   sunbriloj de la vesper'.   The sunset's flooding wine;
 
Jen supre kabino provokas   The most beautiful Maiden entrances   Plej bela virgino jen sidas   The loveliest maiden is sitting
per ora juvelar',   Above wonderfully there,   mirinda sur la montet'   High-throned in yon blue air,
kaj ŝia beleco allogas   Her beautiful golden attire glances,   kaj ŝia oraĵo radias, 1)   Her golden jewels are shining,
kaj ŝia ora harar'.   She combs her golden hair.   ŝi logas kiel magnet'.   She combs her golden hair;
 
Ŝi kombas ĝin, kantas sorĉige,   With golden comb so lustrous,   Ŝi kombas la oran hararon   She combs with comb that is golden,
sirene kantas ŝi   And thereby a song sings,   abundan per ora kombil',   And sings a weird refrain
per neimagebla, mirige   It has a tone so wondrous,   kantante misteran lidon, 2)   That steeps in a deadly enchantment
potenca melodi'.   That powerful melody rings.   ravantan kiel sunbril'.   The listener's ravished brain:
 
Ŝipiston en eta boato   The shipper in the little ship   Ŝipisto en sia ŝipeto   The doomed in his drifting shallop,
Turmentas koremoci'.   It effects with woe sad might;   kaptiĝas per stranga dolor',   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
Ne ĝenas lin rifo-kaskado,   He does not see the rocky slip,   la rifon li tute ignoras.   He sees not the yawing breakers,
rigardas nur supren al ŝi!   He only regards dreaded height.   atentas nur ŝin kun fervor'.   He sees but the maid alone:
 
Ĝis tiras kun si al Rejn-fundo   I believe the turbulent waves   Mi kredas: la ondoj englutas 3)   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
la ondoj lin kun boat'.   Swallow the last shipper and boat;   ŝipiston, ŝipeton je l' fin',   So perish sailor and bark;
Nun kuŝas li en la profundo   She with her singing craves   kaj kulpa pri tio nur estas   And this, with her baleful singing,
pro Loreleja kantad'.   All to visit her magic moat.   kantado de la virin'.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.

        1) En la sube menciita kajero, el kiu mi,
Manfred Retzlaff, kopiis tiun ĉi
esperantigon, la linio tekstas: "kaj sia
oraĵo radias", kun "sia" anstataŭ "ŝia"'.
Tio ŝajne estas aŭ pres-eraro aŭ
gramatika eraro de la tradukinto. 		   
        2) En la origina versio troviĝas tie ĉi la
vorto "liedon", kio estas aŭ pres-eraro
aŭ neologismo inventita de la tradukinto
Paul Christaller. 		   
        3) Mi, Manfred Retzlaff, enmetis la duoblan
punkton post la vorto "kredas". Ĝi mankas
en la origina traduko de Paul Christaller.
