translated by Rolf Mayr | translated by Donald P. Webb | translated by Manfredo Ratislavo
Die Grille trällerte und sang | The cricket had sung her song | Sonis dum somer' kantad'
den ganzen lieben Sommer lang | all summer long | De cikad'.
und fand sich plötzlich sehr beklommen, | but found her victuals too few | Kiam venis la jarfin'
als der Nordwind war gekommen: | when the north wind blew. | Sen proviz' ĝi trovis sin;
im Haus war nicht ein Bröselein, | Nowhere could she espy | Ĉar ne estis ie de
Regenwurm und Fliegenbein. | a single morsel of worm or fly. | Muŝ' aŭ verm' pecet', pro ve'
Hunger schreiend lief sie hin | Her neighbor, the ant, might, | Kaj malsat' ĝi turnis sin
zur Ameis', ihrer Nachbarin, | she thought, help her in her plight, | Al Formik', la najbarin',
mit der Bitte, ihr zu geben | and she begged her for a little grain | Ŝin petante pri paner';
etwas Korn zum Weiterleben | till summer would come back again. | Ĉar grandegis la mizer'.
nur bis nächstes Jahr: | “By next August I’ll repay both | "Ĝis la nova kant-sezon'
"Ich werd' Euch zahlen", sprach sie gar, | Interest and principal; animal’s oath.” | Iĝos ja de mi redon',"
"noch vor Verfall, mein Grillenwort, | Now, the ant may have a fault or two | Ĵuris ĝi, "kaj pagos mi
Hauptstock, Zinsen und so fort." | But lending is not something she will do. | Interezon ĝis Juni'!"
Die Ameis' aber leiht nicht gern: | She asked what the cricket did in summer. | La formiko, kiu vere
sie krankt ein wenig an Knausrigkeit: | “By night and day, to any comer | Ne pruntdonon ŝatis tre,
"Was triebt ihr denn zur Sommerzeit?" | I sang whenever I had the chance.” | Diris: "Mi ĝin donos ne!
fragt sie die Borgerin von fern. | “You sang, did you? That’s nice. Now dance.” | Kion faris vi somere?" -
"Da war ich Tag und Nacht besetzt, | "La pasantojn per muzik'
ich sang und hatte viel Applaus." | Mi ĝojigis ĝis aŭtun'."
"Gesungen habt Ihr? Ei der Daus, | "Mi tre ĝojas, dancu nun!"
wohlan, so tanzet jetzt!" | Diris tiam la formik'.
Translation of the French poem "La Cigale et la Fourmi" by Jean de La Fontaine (*1621-07.08 - †1695-04.12) into German by Rolf Mayr. | Translation of the French poem "La Cigale et la Fourmi" by Jean de La Fontaine (*1621-07.08 - †1695-04.12) into English by Donald P.
