Against a butt I rest, Sir,	ĉe plenbarel’ da vino	La zorgojn mi forgesis.
My heart of ev'ry care I clear,	kaj antaŭ mi da vino ĝi	La vinon engorĝigis mi,
And swear I'll have the best, Sir.	de bona origino.¹⁾	Sed la soif' ne ĉesis.

The cellar man taps any cask,	La vinkelist’ laŭ oportun’,	Do jam denove logas min
I choose by nod or winking;	li ĝojas, se mi drinkas,	La glas' kun rea pleno.
He fills the glass, he loves his task	Boneghumore fartas mi -	Dum plu mi trinkas ankaŭ ĝin,
As I love drinking, drinking!	kaj trinkas, trinkas, trinkas.	Revenas la ĉagreno.

The demon thirst I could withstand,	Soif’ turmentas, ĉi demon’,	................................
Nay, if I could, would kill it;	ĝin devas mi forpeli.	................................
I therefor take my glass in hand	Kaj tre efikas la propon’	................................
And with good liquor fill it.	per vino tion celi.	................................

The world then wears a hue so gay,	La mond’ ŝajnigas nun, ke ĝi	................................
It nearly sets me blinking;	sin rozkolore ŝminkas:	................................
All evil thoughts I scare away,	Boneghumore fartas mi -	................................
While drinking, drinking, drinking!	kaj trinkas, trinkas, trinkas.	................................

That ragging thirst increases,	post ĉiu freŝa vino,	Ĉe ĉiu plua guto,
To drown it, tiplers strive in vain,	la konsekvenc’ de la natur’	Ke ĉiam plu kaj ĉiam pli
It never, never ceases.	pro trinkofest’ sen fino.	Bongustas ĉiu guto,

Yet where's the odds if down I fall?	Konsolas min, dum sen konsci’	Min premas, kara amikar',
E'en now I feel a sinking;	al planko mi nun sinkas:	Dolore la konscio,
I do not harm, wish well to all,	Neniun suferigis mi,	Ke devas mi rezigni, ĉar
