Against a butt I rest, Sir,		bei einem Fass voll Reben
My heart of ev'ry care I clear,		bin frohen Muts und lasse mir

I choose by nod or winking;		gehorsam meinem Winke

The demon thirst I could withstand,		Mich plagt der Dämon, Durst genannt
Nay, if I could, would kill it;		doch um ihn zu verscheuchen,
I therefor take my glass in hand		nehm' ich mein Römerglas zur Hand
And with good liquor fill it.		und lass mir Rheinwein reichen.

The world then wears a hue so gay,		Die ganze Welt erscheint mir nun
It nearly sets me blinking;		in rosenroter Schminke,
All evil thoughts I scare away,		ich könnte niemand Leides tun
While drinking, drinking, drinking!		und trinke, trinke, trinke.

Bu oh, at ev`ry glass I drain,		Allein mein Durst vermehrt sich nur
That ragging thirst increases,		bei jedem vollen Becher,
To drown it, tiplers strive in vain,		das ist die leidige Natur

Yet where's the odds if down I fall?		Doch tröst ich mich, wenn ich zuletzt
E'en now I feel a sinking;		vom Faß zu Boden sinke,
