Christian Morgenstern,
The Werewolf

Christian Morgenstern,
Varulven

translated by Alexander Gross   translated by Sven Collberg

A Werewolf, troubled by his name,   En varulv lopp från fru m.m.
Left wife and brood one night and came   en vacker afton samt begav
To a hidden graveyard to enlist   sig till en bymagisters grav
The aid of a long-dead philologist.   och bad: “Var snäll och konjugera.

“Oh sage, wake up, please don’t berate me,”   mig!” Byskolläraren stod upp
He howled sadly, “Just conjugate me.”   på blecknamnsskyltens mässingknopp
The seer arose a bit unsteady   med svar till den, som satt på pass
Yawned twice, wheezed once, and then was ready.   med tåligt korslagd tass på tass.

“Well, ‘Werewolf’ is your plural past,   “Jag var-ulv 1:a pers. i sing.,
While ‘Waswolf’ is singularly cast:   du, han, hon, den, det var-ulv. Så
There’s ‘Amwolf’ too, the present tense,   vi voro-ulv, I voren. På
And ‘Iswolf,’ ‘Arewolf’ in this same sense.”   de voro-ulv kom ingenting.”

“I know that--I’m no mental cripple--   Varulven myste glad åt hur
The future form and participle   pers. hade följts av sing. och plur.
Are what I crave,” the beast replied.   “Fast”, bad han, “kan det inte ges ens
The scholar paused--again he tried:   en enda pers. i tempus presens?”

“A ‘Will-be-wolf?’ It’s just too long:   Bekänna måste vår magister,
‘Shall-be-wolf?’ ‘Has-been-wolf?’ Utterly wrong!   att därvidlag fanns vissa brister.
Such words are wounds beyond all suture--   En varulv sine imperfecto
I’m sorry, but you have no future.”   var contradictio in adjecto.

The Werewolf knew better--his sons still slept   Varulven satt med tårad lins.
At home, and homewards now he crept,   Han visste att han fanns och finns.
Happy, humble, without apology   Därtill kom också fru m.m.
For such folly of philology.   som även måste existera.
