translated by Max Knight   translated by R. Platteau   translated by Sven Collberg

One night, a banshee slunk away   Un loup-garou, une certaine nuit,   En varulv lopp från fru m.m.
from mate and child, and in the gloom   Laissa sa moitié et puis se rendit   en vacker afton samt begav
requesting him: “Inflect me, pray.”   Et lui dit, “ sur moi dis tout, c’est ton rôle ! ”   och bad: “Var snäll och konjugera.

The village teacher climbed up straight   Un loup-garou, une certaine nuit,   mig!” Byskolläraren stod upp
upon his grave stone with its plate   Laissa sa moitié et puis se rendit   på blecknamnsskyltens mässingknopp
and to the apparition said   Auprès de la tombe d’un maître d’école   med svar till den, som satt på pass
who meekly knelt before the dead:   Et lui dit, “ sur moi dis tout, c’est ton rôle ! ”   med tåligt korslagd tass på tass.

“The banSHEE, in the subject’s place;   “ - On peut à ton sujet puisque nous y sommes   “Jag var-ulv 1:a pers. i sing.,
the banHERS, the possessive case.
The banHER, next, is what they call   Loup-garoù ? mais avant   vi voro-ulv, I voren. På
objective case--and that is all.”   Il faut se dire : loup-garquand ?   de voro-ulv kom ingenting.”

The banshee marveled at the cases   Loup-garcomment ? et puis   Varulven myste glad åt hur
and writhed with pleasure, making faces,   Bien évidemment loup-garqui ? ”   pers. hade följts av sing. och plur.
but said: “You did not add, so far,   Toutes ces questions semblèrent au loup bien absconses,   “Fast”, bad han, “kan det inte ges ens
the plural to the singular!”

that this was not within his ken.   Etre imaginaire, nul ne peut te voir ! ”   att därvidlag fanns vissa brister.
“While bans are frequent”, he advised,   A ces mots l’animal éclata tout en larmes.   En varulv sine imperfecto
“A she cannot be plurized.”   “ - Oh!, même les baisers de ma douce moitié   var contradictio in adjecto.

The banshee, rising clammily,   Ne pourrons plus me faire me sentir tout entier.   Varulven satt med tårad lins.
wailed: “What about my family?”
Then, being not a learned creature,   Mais comme le loup était bien poli   Därtill kom också fru m.m.
said humbly “Thanks” and left the teacher.
