Jean de La Fontaine, | Jean de La Fontaine,
translated by Rolf Mayr | translated by Donald P. Webb
Die Grille trällerte und sang | The cricket had sung her song
den ganzen lieben Sommer lang | all summer long
und fand sich plötzlich sehr beklommen, | but found her victuals too few
als der Nordwind war gekommen: | when the north wind blew.
im Haus war nicht ein Bröselein, | Nowhere could she espy
Regenwurm und Fliegenbein. | a single morsel of worm or fly.
Hunger schreiend lief sie hin | Her neighbor, the ant, might,
zur Ameis', ihrer Nachbarin, | she thought, help her in her plight,
mit der Bitte, ihr zu geben | and she begged her for a little grain
etwas Korn zum Weiterleben | till summer would come back again.
nur bis nächstes Jahr: | “By next August I’ll repay both
"Ich werd' Euch zahlen", sprach sie gar, | Interest and principal; animal’s oath.”
"noch vor Verfall, mein Grillenwort, | Now, the ant may have a fault or two
Hauptstock, Zinsen und so fort." | But lending is not something she will do.
Die Ameis' aber leiht nicht gern: | She asked what the cricket did in summer.
sie krankt ein wenig an Knausrigkeit: | “By night and day, to any comer
"Was triebt ihr denn zur Sommerzeit?" | I sang whenever I had the chance.”
fragt sie die Borgerin von fern. | “You sang, did you? That’s nice. Now dance.”
"Da war ich Tag und Nacht besetzt,
ich sang und hatte viel Applaus."
"Gesungen habt Ihr? Ei der Daus,
wohlan, so tanzet jetzt!"
