Jean de La Fontaine, | Jean de La Fontaine, | Jean de La Fontaine, | Jean de La Fontaine,
translated by Rolf Mayr | translated by Antoni Grabowski | translated by Donald P. Webb
Die Grille trällerte und sang | La cigale, ayant chanté | Kantis dum somer' sen fin' | The cricket had sung her song
den ganzen lieben Sommer lang | Tout l'été, | Cikadin'. | all summer long
und fand sich plötzlich sehr beklommen, | Se trouva fort dépourvue | Kiam frosta vento blovis | but found her victuals too few
| Sen provizo ŝin ektrovis, | when the north wind blew.
im Haus war nicht ein Bröselein, | Pas un seul petit morceau | Sen malgranda eĉ pecet' | Nowhere could she espy
Regenwurm und Fliegenbein. | De mouche ou de vermisseau | Da muŝeto aŭ vermet'; | a single morsel of worm or fly.
Hunger schreiend lief sie hin | Elle alla crier famine | La malsato pelis ŝin | Her neighbor, the ant, might,
| she thought, help her in her plight,
mit der Bitte, ihr zu geben | La priant de lui prêter | Kaj ŝi petis kun insisto: | and she begged her for a little grain
etwas Korn zum Weiterleben | Quelque grain pour subsister | "Donu grajnojn por ekzisto | till summer would come back again.
| “By next August I’ll repay both
"Ich werd' Euch zahlen", sprach sie gar, | «Je vous paierai, lui dit-elle, | Mi vin pagos, laŭ ordon', | Interest and principal; animal’s oath.”
"noch vor Verfall, mein Grillenwort, | Avant l'oût, foi d'animal, | En Aŭgust', pro best-honor', | Now, the ant may have a fault or two
Hauptstock, Zinsen und so fort." | Intérêt et principal .» | La procenton kun valor'." | But lending is not something she will do.
She asked what the cricket did in summer.
sie krankt ein wenig an Knausrigkeit: | C'est là son moindre défaut | Per pruntemo, estas vere; | “By night and day, to any comer
"Was triebt ihr denn zur Sommerzeit?" | «Que faisiez-vous au temps chaud? | "Kion faris vi somere?" | I sang whenever I had the chance.”
fragt sie die Borgerin von fern. | Dit-elle à cette emprunteuse. | Diris ŝi al pruntulino. | “You sang, did you? That’s nice. Now dance.”
"Da war ich Tag und Nacht besetzt, | Nuit et jour à tout venant | --"Tage, nokte al venantoj,
ich sang und hatte viel Applaus." | Je chantais, ne vous déplaise. | Ne mallaŭdu -- kantis mi."
"Gesungen habt Ihr? Ei der Daus, | - Vous chantiez? j'en suis fort aise. | --"Kantis? -- gaja jen meti'!
wohlan, so tanzet jetzt!" | Eh bien : dansez maintenant.» | Nun ekdancu post la kantoj!"
