La velo

translated by B. Denken   translated by A. Z. Foreman   translated by Konstantin Gusev

Verloren glänzt in blauen Weiten   A sail drifts white and on its own   Blankadas velo unusola
Ein Segel weiß in dunst’gem Schein.   Amid the light blue ocean haze.   En la nebula mara blu'
Was sucht es nur in fernen Breiten?   What does it seek in distant country?   Ĉi kion lasis, kion volas
Was ließ es Hort und Heim allein?   What made it leave its native bays?   En fremdaj landoj serĉi plu?

Es spiel’n die Wogen, Winde pfeifen,   Great billows play. High winds are whistling   Ondiĝas kaj la vento spiras,
Es jammert, ächzt und knirscht der Mast –   Down at the bending, creaking mast   Fleksante l'maston kun fervor',
Doch, ach! nach Glück will es nicht greifen   Oh! This one seeks no happy ending   Ve! Ne feliĉon vel' aspiras,
Noch ihm entflieh’n in blinder Hast.   And does not flee a happy past.   Nek de l'feliĉo kuras for.

Tief unten schäumt lichtblau die Flut,   Beneath, a brighter stream than azure.   Ĝin kovras blua rond' ĉiela,
Hoch oben gleißen Sonnes Brände,   Above, the golden sunray flows   Sub ĝi lazuras onda spac',
Doch sucht es mehr nach Sturmes Wut,   Yet this one, restive...quests for tempests   Sed ŝtormon serĉas ĝi ribela,
Als ob’s im Sturme — Ruhe fände.   As if in tempests were repose.   Kvazaŭ en ŝtormoj estus pac'.
