Adriaen (François) Valéry,
Oramus, vocamus

Adriaen (François) Valéry,
We gather together

Adriaen (François) Valéry,
Wilt heden nu treden

translated by Eduard Kremser   translated by Theodore Baker

1. Oramus, vocamus iustissimum Deum,   We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;   Wilt heden nu treden voor God, den Heere,
Qui munit et punit severe reos   He chastens and hastens His will to make known.   Hem boven al loven van harte zeer,
Nec sinit peiores domare meliores;   The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.   En maken groot zijns lieven namens eere,
Sit semper Deo laus, qui respicit nos!   Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.   Die daar nu onzen vijand slaat terneer.

3. Proeliatus ad latus adiuvit nos Deus;   Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,   Ter eeren ons Heeren wilt al uw dagen
Agebat, volebat, ut vinceret ius.   Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;   Dit wonder bijzonder gedenken toch.
Vix sumus aggressi, sunt hostes oppressi;   So from the beginning the fight we were winning;   Maakt u, o mensch, voor God steeds wel te dragen,
Est, quod adiusti nos, triumphus Tuus.   Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!   Doet ieder recht en wacht u voor bedrog!

4. Lauderis, canteris, qui proelia regis!   We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,   Bidt, waket en maket, dat g’in bekoring
Oramus, optamus, ut adiuves nos,   And pray that Thou still our Defender will be.
Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!   Al waar’ zijn rijk nog eens zoo sterk bewald!
