Adriaen (François) Valéry,
Oramus, vocamus

Adriaen (François) Valéry,
We gather together

translated by Eduard Kremser   translated by Theodore Baker

1. Oramus, vocamus iustissimum Deum,   We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
Qui munit et punit severe reos   He chastens and hastens His will to make known.
Nec sinit peiores domare meliores;   The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
Sit semper Deo laus, qui respicit nos!   Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.

3. Proeliatus ad latus adiuvit nos Deus;   Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Agebat, volebat, ut vinceret ius.   Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
Vix sumus aggressi, sunt hostes oppressi;   So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Est, quod adiusti nos, triumphus Tuus.   Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!

4. Lauderis, canteris, qui proelia regis!   We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,
Oramus, optamus, ut adiuves nos,   And pray that Thou still our Defender will be.
Ne, fidos quos nosti, subiecti sint hosti!   Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
Sit semper Tibi laus! fac nos liberos!   Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
