Adriaen (François) Valéry,
Oramus, vocamus

Adriaen (François) Valéry,
Wilt heden nu treden

Adriaen (François) Valéry,
We gather together

translated by Eduard Kremser       translated by Theodore Baker

1. Oramus, vocamus iustissimum Deum,   Wilt heden nu treden voor God, den Heere,   We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
Qui munit et punit severe reos   Hem boven al loven van harte zeer,   He chastens and hastens His will to make known.
Nec sinit peiores domare meliores;   En maken groot zijns lieven namens eere,   The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
Sit semper Deo laus, qui respicit nos!   Die daar nu onzen vijand slaat terneer.   Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.

3. Proeliatus ad latus adiuvit nos Deus;   Ter eeren ons Heeren wilt al uw dagen   Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Agebat, volebat, ut vinceret ius.   Dit wonder bijzonder gedenken toch.   Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
Vix sumus aggressi, sunt hostes oppressi;   Maakt u, o mensch, voor God steeds wel te dragen,   So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Est, quod adiusti nos, triumphus Tuus.   Doet ieder recht en wacht u voor bedrog!   Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!

4. Lauderis, canteris, qui proelia regis!   Bidt, waket en maket, dat g’in bekoring   We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,
Oramus, optamus, ut adiuves nos,   En ’t kwade met schade toch niet en valt.   And pray that Thou still our Defender will be.
Ne, fidos quos nosti, subiecti sint hosti!   Uw vroomheid brengt den vijand tot verstoring,   Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
Sit semper Tibi laus! fac nos liberos!   Al waar’ zijn rijk nog eens zoo sterk bewald!   Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
