Stenka Rasin

Volga, Volga (Stenka Rasin)

Sten'ka Razin

translated by N. N. 21   translated by N. N. 20   translated by Tr. Jacob Robbins

From beyond the wooded island
Ziehen Kähne malerisch, -   underskønne Volgaflod   To the river wide and free
|: Fangen leis an aufzuwachen,   Stenjka Rasins stolte både   Proudly sailed the arrow-breasted
Bang ist jedes Angesicht. :|   ud på nye togter stod.   Ships of Cossack yeomanry.

On the first is Stenka Razin
Selig in der Trunkenheit,   sidder selv i bådens stavn,   With a princess at his side,
With his beautiful young bride. :|

..................................................   Men hans mænd er Donkosakker,   3. But behind them rose a whisper,
..................................................   de er vrede, for de ved,   "He has left his sword to woo;
..................................................   han har glemt dem for en kvinde,   |: One short night, and Stenka Razin
..................................................   for en nat i kærlighed.   Has become a woman too!" :|

..................................................   Stenjka Rasin hører latter,   4. Stenka Razin hears the jeering
..................................................   blodet koger i hans bryst   Of his discontented band,
..................................................   Over Volgas brede strømme   |: And the lovely Persian princess
..................................................   højt nu lyder Stenjkas røst.   He has circled with his hand. :|

..................................................   .......................................   5. His black brows have come together
..................................................   .......................................   As the waves of anger rise,
..................................................   .......................................   |: And the blood comes rushing swiftly
..................................................   .......................................   To his piercing, jet-black eyes. :|

..................................................   .......................................   6. "I will give you all you ask for,
..................................................   .......................................   Life and heart, and head and hand,"
..................................................   .......................................   |: Echo rolls the pealing thunder
..................................................   .......................................   Of his voice across the land. :|

Plötzlich tönt ein dumpf Gemurre:   .......................................   7. "Volga, Volga, mother Volga,
Er verrät uns um ein Weib,   .......................................   Deep and wide beneath the sun,
|: All der Seinen Glück vergißt er   .......................................   |: You have never seen a present
Um geringen Zeitvertreib. :|   .......................................   From the Cossack of the Don. :|

Wolga, Wolga, Mutter Wolga,   .......................................   8. And that peace might rule as always
Ruhig fließest du dahin,   .......................................   All my free-born men and brave,
|: Ahnst nicht, was ein Donkosake   .......................................   |: Volga, Volga, mother Volga,
Fürchterliches hat im Sinn. :|   .......................................   Volga, make this girl a grave." :|

..................................................   "For at ingen splid skal være   9. With a sudden, mighty movement,
..................................................   mellem frie mænd,- tag så   Razin lifts the beauty high,
..................................................   Moder Volga, denne kvinde!"   |: And he casts her where the waters
..................................................   og hans arm om hende lå.   Of the Volga move and sigh. :|

Now a silence like the grave sinks
Hebt das Weib in wilder Wut, -   da sin brud og kaster ned   To all those who stand to see,
|: Wolga, Wolga, nimm ein Opfer!   /: i de dybe, mørke bølger,   |: And the battle-hardened Cossacks
Und er wirft sie in die Flut. :|   sine nætters salighed. :/   Sink to weep on bended knee. :|

"Dance, you fool, and men, make merry!
Hört noch ihren Jammerschrei:   I med næbbet? Bliv kun ved!   What has got into your eyes?
|: Stirb als Opfer meiner Treue!   Dans og syng de røversange,   |: Let us thunder out a chanty
Stenka Rasin, er ist frei. :|   syng for hendes sjælefred!"   Of a place where beauty lies." :|

From beyond the wooded island
Und die Kähne ziehen fort,   stævner Stenjka Rasin ud   To the river wide and free,
:/   Ships of Cossack yeomanry. :|
