      An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ne scias mi, kial mi estas   Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,   I cannot divine what it meaneth,
Malgaja en la kor’.   Tristissimus cur sim,   This haunting nameless pain:
Antikva fabelo restas   Antiqui aevi fabellam   A tale of the bygone ages
Por ĉiam en mia memor’.   Cur saepe volverim.   Keeps brooding through my brain:

Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,   Vesperascit et frigescit,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,
Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,   Et Rhenus leniter it,   And peaceful flows the Rhine,
La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas   Cacumen montis lucescit,   The thirsty summits are drinking
En vespersuna bril’.   Dum Phoebus occidit.   The sunset's flooding wine;

Belega knabino jen tronas   Sedet in summo montis   The loveliest maiden is sitting
Kun ora juvelar’,   Virgo pulcherrima,   High-throned in yon blue air,
La belan vizaĝon kronas   Auro nitet gemma frontis,   Her golden jewels are shining,
Mirinde la ora harar’.   Se pectit auricoma.   She combs her golden hair;

Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro   Aureolo pectine pectit,   She combs with comb that is golden,
Kaj dume kantas ŝi.   Carmen canens procul,   And sings a weird refrain
Mirige tuŝas al koro   Mirandum id habet modum   That steeps in a deadly enchantment
Sorĉiga la melodi’.   Nec non virilem simul.   The listener's ravished brain:

Kaj sopiregon eksentas   In cymba navitam mille   The doomed in his drifting shallop,
Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;   Angores feri tenent,   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
Rifaron li ne priatentas,   Non videt scopulos ille,   He sees not the yawing breakers,
Al monto rigardas li nur.   Ocli non si sursum vident.   He sees but the maid alone:

Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine   Opinor undas devorare   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,   Nautam cum navicula,   So perish sailor and bark;
Kaj tion kaŭzis feine   Effecit solo canendo   And this, with her baleful singing,
La Loreleja kantad’.   Lurleia id dea.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
