Heinrich Heine,
Die Lorelei

Heinrich Heine,
The Lorelei

Heinrich Heine,
The Lorelei

    translated by Mark Twain   translated by L. W. Garnham

    An ancient legend of the Rhine

Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,   I cannot divine what it meaneth,   I do not know what it signifies.
daß ich so traurig bin;   This haunting nameless pain:   That I am so sorrowful?
ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,   A tale of the bygone ages   A fable of old Times so terrifies,
das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.   Keeps brooding through my brain:   Leaves my heart so thoughtful.

Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,   The faint air cools in the gloaming,   The air is cool and it darkens,
und ruhig fließt der Rhein;   And peaceful flows the Rhine,   And calmly flows the Rhine;
der Gipfel des Berges funkelt   The thirsty summits are drinking   The summit of the mountain hearkens
im Abendsonnenschein.   The sunset's flooding wine;   In evening sunshine line.

Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet   The loveliest maiden is sitting   The most beautiful Maiden entrances
dort oben wunderbar,   High-throned in yon blue air,   Above wonderfully there,
ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,   Her golden jewels are shining,   Her beautiful golden attire glances,
sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.   She combs her golden hair;   She combs her golden hair.

Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,   She combs with comb that is golden,   With golden comb so lustrous,
und singt ein Lied dabei;   And sings a weird refrain   And thereby a song sings,
das hat eine wundersame,   That steeps in a deadly enchantment   It has a tone so wondrous,
gewaltige Melodei.   The listener's ravished brain:   That powerful melody rings.

Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe   The doomed in his drifting shallop,   The shipper in the little ship
ergreift es mit wildem Weh;   Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   It effects with woe sad might;
er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,   He sees not the yawing breakers,   He does not see the rocky slip,
er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.   He sees but the maid alone:   He only regards dreaded height.

Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen   The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   I believe the turbulent waves
am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;   So perish sailor and bark;   Swallow the last shipper and boat;
und das hat mit ihrem Singen   And this, with her baleful singing,   She with her singing craves
die Lorelei getan.   Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.   All to visit her magic moat.
