That I am so sorrowful?	Malgaja en la kor’.	This haunting nameless pain:	Tristissimus cur sim,	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;
A fable of old Times so terrifies,	Antikva fabelo restas	A tale of the bygone ages	Antiqui aevi fabellam	el tempo jam enterigita
Leaves my heart so thoughtful.	Por ĉiam en mia memor’.	Keeps brooding through my brain:	Cur saepe volverim.	legendo al mi reviviĝis.

The air is cool and it darkens,	Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,	Vesperascit et frigescit,	Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,
And calmly flows the Rhine;	Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,	And peaceful flows the Rhine,	Et Rhenus leniter it,	la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,
The summit of the mountain hearkens	La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas	The thirsty summits are drinking	Cacumen montis lucescit,	per oro de l'sun' en vespero

The most beautiful Maiden entrances	Belega knabino jen tronas	The loveliest maiden is sitting	Sedet in summo montis	Plej belan knabinon mi vidas:
Above wonderfully there,	Kun ora juvelar’,	High-throned in yon blue air,	Virgo pulcherrima,	en ora ornamo brilante,
Her beautiful golden attire glances,	La belan vizaĝon kronas	Her golden jewels are shining,	Auro nitet gemma frontis,	sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,
She combs her golden hair.	Mirinde la ora harar’.	She combs her golden hair;	Se pectit auricoma.	la harojn mistere kombante.

With golden comb so lustrous,	Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro	She combs with comb that is golden,	Aureolo pectine pectit,	La oran kombilon ŝi movas
And thereby a song sings,	Kaj dume kantas ŝi.	And sings a weird refrain	Carmen canens procul,	kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,
It has a tone so wondrous,	Mirige tuŝas al koro	That steeps in a deadly enchantment	Mirandum id habet modum	kaj forto mirinda sin trovas
That powerful melody rings.	Sorĉiga la melodi’.	The listener's ravished brain:	Nec non virilem simul.	en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.

The shipper in the little ship	Kaj sopiregon eksentas	The doomed in his drifting shallop,	In cymba navitam mille	Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,
It effects with woe sad might;	Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	Angores feri tenent,	ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,
He does not see the rocky slip,	Rifaron li ne priatentas,	He sees not the yawing breakers,	Non videt scopulos ille,	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero
He only regards dreaded height.	Al monto rigardas li nur.	He sees but the maid alone:	Ocli non si sursum vident.	rigardas li al la kantanto.

I believe the turbulent waves	Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Opinor undas devorare	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela
Swallow the last shipper and boat;	Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,	So perish sailor and bark;	Nautam cum navicula,	perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;
She with her singing craves	Kaj tion kaŭzis feine	And this, with her baleful singing,	Effecit solo canendo	ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,
All to visit her magic moat.	La Loreleja kantad’.	Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.	Lurleia id dea.	per sia mirinda kantado.
