I cannot divine what it meaneth,	Ne scias mi, kial mi estas	Ne scias mi, kial subita
This haunting nameless pain:	Malgaja en la kor’.	malgaj' en la koro naskiĝis;
A tale of the bygone ages	Antikva fabelo restas	el tempo jam enterigita
Keeps brooding through my brain:	Por ĉiam en mia memor’.	legendo al mi reviviĝis.

The faint air cools in the gloaming,	Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,	Jam malvarmetiĝas l' aero,
And peaceful flows the Rhine,	Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,	la Rejno mallaŭte babilas,
The thirsty summits are drinking	La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas	per oro de l'sun' en vespero

High-throned in yon blue air,	Kun ora juvelar’,	en ora ornamo brilante,
Her golden jewels are shining,	La belan vizaĝon kronas	sur supro de l' monto ŝi sidas,
She combs her golden hair;	Mirinde la ora harar’.	la harojn mistere kombante.

She combs with comb that is golden,	Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro	La oran kombilon ŝi movas
And sings a weird refrain	Kaj dume kantas ŝi.	kaj kantas tra l' pura aero,
That steeps in a deadly enchantment	Mirige tuŝas al koro	kaj forto mirinda sin trovas
The listener's ravished brain:	Sorĉiga la melodi’.	en tiu ĉi kant' de l'vespero.

The doomed in his drifting shallop,	Kaj sopiregon eksentas	Ŝipet' iras sur la rivero,
Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;	ŝipisto ektremis de l' kanto,
He sees not the yawing breakers,	Rifaron li ne priatentas,	kaj blinda por ĉiu danĝero
He sees but the maid alone:	Al monto rigardas li nur.	rigardas li al la kantanto.

The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine	Ha, baldaŭ ŝipisto la bela
So perish sailor and bark;	Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,	perdiĝis sub l' akvoturnado;
And this, with her baleful singing,	Kaj tion kaŭzis feine	ĝin Lorelej' faris kruela,
