I cannot divine what it meaneth,	Ne scias mi, kial mi estas	Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,
This haunting nameless pain:	Malgaja en la kor’.	daß ich so traurig bin;
A tale of the bygone ages	Antikva fabelo restas	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
Keeps brooding through my brain:	Por ĉiam en mia memor’.	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.

The faint air cools in the gloaming,	Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,
And peaceful flows the Rhine,	Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,	und ruhig fließt der Rhein;
The thirsty summits are drinking	La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas	der Gipfel des Berges funkelt
The sunset's flooding wine;	En vespersuna bril’.	im Abendsonnenschein.

The loveliest maiden is sitting	Belega knabino jen tronas	Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet
High-throned in yon blue air,	Kun ora juvelar’,	dort oben wunderbar,
Her golden jewels are shining,	La belan vizaĝon kronas	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,
She combs her golden hair;	Mirinde la ora harar’.	sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.

She combs with comb that is golden,	Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,
And sings a weird refrain	Kaj dume kantas ŝi.	und singt ein Lied dabei;
That steeps in a deadly enchantment	Mirige tuŝas al koro	das hat eine wundersame,
The listener's ravished brain:	Sorĉiga la melodi’.	gewaltige Melodei.

The doomed in his drifting shallop,	Kaj sopiregon eksentas	Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe
Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,	Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;	ergreift es mit wildem Weh;
He sees not the yawing breakers,	Rifaron li ne priatentas,	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
He sees but the maid alone:	Al monto rigardas li nur.	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.

The pitiless billwos engulf him!-	Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
So perish sailor and bark;	Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
And this, with her baleful singing,	Kaj tion kaŭzis feine	und das hat mit ihrem Singen
