Heinrich Heine,
The Lorelei

Heinrich Heine,
Lorelej'

Heinrich Heine,
Lurleia

translated by Mark Twain   translated by Leopold Elb   translated by N. N. 01

An ancient legend of the Rhine   Tiu traduko estas poste iom modifita de
aliuloj, ne estas la origina traduk-versio
de Leopold Elb.

I cannot divine what it meaneth,   Ne scias mi, kial mi estas   Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,
This haunting nameless pain:   Malgaja en la kor’.   Tristissimus cur sim,
A tale of the bygone ages   Antikva fabelo restas   Antiqui aevi fabellam
Keeps brooding through my brain:   Por ĉiam en mia memor’.   Cur saepe volverim.

The faint air cools in the gloaming,   Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,   Vesperascit et frigescit,
And peaceful flows the Rhine,   Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,   Et Rhenus leniter it,
The thirsty summits are drinking   La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas   Cacumen montis lucescit,
The sunset's flooding wine;   En vespersuna bril’.   Dum Phoebus occidit.

The loveliest maiden is sitting   Belega knabino jen tronas   Sedet in summo montis
High-throned in yon blue air,   Kun ora juvelar’,   Virgo pulcherrima,
Her golden jewels are shining,   La belan vizaĝon kronas   Auro nitet gemma frontis,
She combs her golden hair;   Mirinde la ora harar’.   Se pectit auricoma.

She combs with comb that is golden,   Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro   Aureolo pectine pectit,
And sings a weird refrain   Kaj dume kantas ŝi.   Carmen canens procul,
That steeps in a deadly enchantment   Mirige tuŝas al koro   Mirandum id habet modum
The listener's ravished brain:   Sorĉiga la melodi’.   Nec non virilem simul.

The doomed in his drifting shallop,   Kaj sopiregon eksentas   In cymba navitam mille
Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,   Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;   Angores feri tenent,
He sees not the yawing breakers,   Rifaron li ne priatentas,   Non videt scopulos ille,
He sees but the maid alone:   Al monto rigardas li nur.   Ocli non si sursum vident.

The pitiless billwos engulf him!-   Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine   Opinor undas devorare
So perish sailor and bark;   Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,   Nautam cum navicula,
And this, with her baleful singing,   Kaj tion kaŭzis feine   Effecit solo canendo
Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.   La Loreleja kantad’.   Lurleia id dea.
