Jean de La Fontaine, | Jean de La Fontaine, | Jean de La Fontaine,
translated by Rolf Mayr | translated by Donald P. Webb
Die Grille trällerte und sang | The cricket had sung her song | La cigale, ayant chanté
den ganzen lieben Sommer lang | all summer long | Tout l'été,
und fand sich plötzlich sehr beklommen, | but found her victuals too few | Se trouva fort dépourvue
als der Nordwind war gekommen: | when the north wind blew. | Quand la bise fut venue.
im Haus war nicht ein Bröselein, | Nowhere could she espy | Pas un seul petit morceau
Regenwurm und Fliegenbein. | a single morsel of worm or fly. | De mouche ou de vermisseau
Hunger schreiend lief sie hin | Her neighbor, the ant, might, | Elle alla crier famine
zur Ameis', ihrer Nachbarin, | she thought, help her in her plight, | Chez la fourmi sa voisine,
mit der Bitte, ihr zu geben | and she begged her for a little grain | La priant de lui prêter
etwas Korn zum Weiterleben | till summer would come back again. | Quelque grain pour subsister
nur bis nächstes Jahr: | “By next August I’ll repay both | Jusqu'à la saison nouvelle
"Ich werd' Euch zahlen", sprach sie gar, | Interest and principal; animal’s oath.” | «Je vous paierai, lui dit-elle,
"noch vor Verfall, mein Grillenwort, | Now, the ant may have a fault or two | Avant l'oût, foi d'animal,
Hauptstock, Zinsen und so fort." | But lending is not something she will do. | Intérêt et principal .»
Die Ameis' aber leiht nicht gern: | She asked what the cricket did in summer. | La fourmi n'est pas prêteuse ;
sie krankt ein wenig an Knausrigkeit: | “By night and day, to any comer | C'est là son moindre défaut
"Was triebt ihr denn zur Sommerzeit?" | I sang whenever I had the chance.” | «Que faisiez-vous au temps chaud?
fragt sie die Borgerin von fern. | “You sang, did you? That’s nice. Now dance.”
wohlan, so tanzet jetzt!" | Eh bien : dansez maintenant.»
Translation of the French poem "La Cigale et la Fourmi" by Jean de La Fontaine (*1621-07.08 - †1695-04.12) into German by Rolf Mayr. Diese Übersetzung fand ich, Manfred Retzlaff, abgedruckt in der Kirchenzeitung "Kirchen und Leben" des Bistums Münster, in der Ausgabe vom 16 Mai 1999, auf Seite 10.
