Ne scias mi, kial mi estas	Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,	I cannot divine what it meaneth,
Malgaja en la kor’.	daß ich so traurig bin;	This haunting nameless pain:
Antikva fabelo restas	ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,	A tale of the bygone ages
Por ĉiam en mia memor’.	das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.	Keeps brooding through my brain:

Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,	Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,
Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,	und ruhig fließt der Rhein;	And peaceful flows the Rhine,
La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas	der Gipfel des Berges funkelt	The thirsty summits are drinking
En vespersuna bril’.	im Abendsonnenschein.	The sunset's flooding wine;

Belega knabino jen tronas	Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet	The loveliest maiden is sitting
Kun ora juvelar’,	dort oben wunderbar,	High-throned in yon blue air,
La belan vizaĝon kronas	ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,	Her golden jewels are shining,
Mirinde la ora harar’.	sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.	She combs her golden hair;

Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro	Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme,	She combs with comb that is golden,
Kaj dume kantas ŝi.	und singt ein Lied dabei;	And sings a weird refrain
Mirige tuŝas al koro	das hat eine wundersame,	That steeps in a deadly enchantment
Sorĉiga la melodi’.	gewaltige Melodei.	The listener's ravished brain:

Kaj sopiregon eksentas	Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe	The doomed in his drifting shallop,
Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;	ergreift es mit wildem Weh;	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
Rifaron li ne priatentas,	er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,	He sees not the yawing breakers,
Al monto rigardas li nur.	er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.	He sees but the maid alone:

Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine	Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,	am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;	So perish sailor and bark;
Kaj tion kaŭzis feine	und das hat mit ihrem Singen	And this, with her baleful singing,
