Ignoro, quid id sibi velit,	Ne scias mi, kial mi estas	I cannot divine what it meaneth,
Tristissimus cur sim,	Malgaja en la kor’.	This haunting nameless pain:
Antiqui aevi fabellam	Antikva fabelo restas	A tale of the bygone ages
Cur saepe volverim.	Por ĉiam en mia memor’.	Keeps brooding through my brain:

Vesperascit et frigescit,	Vespero jam ekmalheliĝas,	The faint air cools in the gloaming,
Et Rhenus leniter it,	Fluadas la Rejn’ en trankvil’,	And peaceful flows the Rhine,
Cacumen montis lucescit,	La supro de l’ monto lumiĝas	The thirsty summits are drinking
Dum Phoebus occidit.	En vespersuna bril’.	The sunset's flooding wine;

Sedet in summo montis	Belega knabino jen tronas	The loveliest maiden is sitting
Virgo pulcherrima,	Kun ora juvelar’,	High-throned in yon blue air,
Auro nitet gemma frontis,	La belan vizaĝon kronas	Her golden jewels are shining,
Se pectit auricoma.	Mirinde la ora harar’.	She combs her golden hair;

Aureolo pectine pectit,	Ŝi uzas kombilon el oro	She combs with comb that is golden,
Carmen canens procul,	Kaj dume kantas ŝi.	And sings a weird refrain
Mirandum id habet modum	Mirige tuŝas al koro	That steeps in a deadly enchantment
Nec non virilem simul.	Sorĉiga la melodi’.	The listener's ravished brain:

In cymba navitam mille	Kaj sopiregon eksentas	The doomed in his drifting shallop,
Angores feri tenent,	Ŝipisto dum sia vetur’;	Is tranced with the sad sweet tone,
Non videt scopulos ille,	Rifaron li ne priatentas,	He sees not the yawing breakers,
Ocli non si sursum vident.	Al monto rigardas li nur.	He sees but the maid alone:

Opinor undas devorare	Mi kredas, ke dronos finfine	The pitiless billwos engulf him!-
Nautam cum navicula,	Ŝipisto kun sia boat’,	So perish sailor and bark;
Effecit solo canendo	Kaj tion kaŭzis feine	And this, with her baleful singing,
Lurleia id dea.	La Loreleja kantad’.	Is the Lorelei's gruesome work.
