At midnight an angel was crossing the sky,		Kun kanto solena en nokta ĉiel'
And quietly he sang;		Sin portis mirinda anĝel';
The moon and the stars and the concourse of clouds		Kaj luno, kaj steloj, kaj nuboj en rond'
Paid heed to his heavenly song.		Atentis la himnon de l' mond'.

He sang of the bliss of the innocent souls		Li kantis pri vivo sen zorga ĉagren'
In heavenly gardens above;		Sub branĉoj de pura Eden';
Of almighty God he sang out, and his praise		Kaj laŭd' al keruboj, al granda Sinjor'
Was pure and sincere.		Elflugis sincere el kor'.

He bore in his arms a young soul		En brakoj animon li portis al ter',
To our valley of sorrow and tears;		Al mond' de malĝojo, mizer';
The young soul remembered the heavenly song		Kaj restis la kanto en juna anim'
So vivid and yet without words.		Sen vorto, sen unu esprim'.

And long did it struggle on earth,		Kaj plena je stranga, mirinda dezir'
With wondrous desire imbued;		Ĝi vagis en mond' de sopir',
But none of the tedious songs of our earth		Kaj tedis al ĝi post la kant' de l' eter'
Could rival celestial song.		La veaj motivoj de l' ter'.
