She walks in Beauty, like the Night		Sie geht in Schönheit, gleich der Nacht
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;		In wolkenlosem Sternenlicht;
And all that’s best of dark and bright		Des Schattens und des Lichtes Pracht
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;		Eint sich in ihrem Angesicht;
Thus mellowed to the tender light		Aus dem ein milder Schimmer lacht,
Which Heaven to gaudy day denies –		Der stets dem grellen Tag gebricht.

One shade the more – one ray the less		Ein Strahl hinweg, ein Schatten mehr,
Had half impaired the nameless grace		Und fort würd' auch die Anmut sein,
Which waves in every raven tress		Die aus dem Rabenlockenmeer
Or softly lightens o’er her face		Die Stirn umglänzt mit sanftem Schein,
Where thoughts serenely sweet express		Wo die Gedanken süß und hehr
How pure – how dear their dwelling place!		Verkünden, dass ihr Wohnsitz rein.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,		Und auf der Stirn, dem Wangenpaar,
So soft – so calm – yet eloquent,		Spricht von dem reinsten Jugendmut
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,		So sanft beredt, so ruhig klar
But tell of days in goodness spent –		Des Lächelns Reiz, der Farben Glut,
