Johann Wolfgang von Goethe,
Old age

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe,
La aĝo

translated by N. N. 71   translated by Manfred Retzlaff

OLD age is courteous--no one more:   La aĝo estas ĝentila vir',
For time after time he knocks at the door,   Multfoje li petas pri enir'.
But nobody says, "Walk in, sir, pray!"   Neniu diras: Eniru vi!
Yet turns he not from the door away,   Ekstere ne volas resti li.
But lifts the latch, and enters with speed.   Subite li enigas sin,
And then they cry "A cool one, indeed!"   Krudulon oni nomas lin.
