John Ellerton,
The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended

John Ellerton,
Ni estis ja en mano Dia

    translated by Manfredo Ratislavo

1. The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended,   1. Ni estis ja en mano Dia,
The darkness falls at Thy behest;   dum brilis super ni la Sun'.
To Thee our morning hymns ascended,   Protektu nin per mano Via
Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.   dumnokte, Dio, ankaŭ nun!

2. We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping,   2. La ter' cirkulas ĝis la veno
While earth rolls onward into light,   de l' nova tag', ripozas ni
Through all the world her watch is keeping,   dum tiu nokt' en Via beno1)
And rests not now by day or night.   ĝis la mateno, kara Di'.

3. As o’er each continent and island   3. Nun kiam en malhel' fordronas
The dawn leads on another day,   la Sun' en tiu ĉi vesper',
The voice of prayer is never silent,   multvoĉe Via laŭdo sonas
Nor dies the strain of praise away.   alialoke sur la Ter'.

4. The sun that bids us rest is waking   4. Ĉar kiel estas ĉirkaŭanta
Our brethren ’neath the western sky,   la Teron lumo de l' maten',
And hour by hour fresh lips are making   senĉese estas plusonanta
Thy wondrous doings heard on high.   preĝado de la homoj jen.

5. So be it, Lord; Thy throne shall never,   5. Ja estas, Dio ĉiopova,
Like earth’s proud empires, pass away:   senlima Via regno, nin
Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever,   konduku al la tago nova
Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway.   en Via regno je la fin'!
